NOV Type P Liner Clamp: Check the Connection Before the Torque Table

A work order that says only “tighten the clamp” leaves an important question unanswered: which connection? This document-check guide helps distinguish a liner clamp from nearby rod connections and the liner pilot bushing. It is not a tightening, disassembly or return-to-service procedure.

Three references that must stay separate

NOV document 25-101131 treats these connections in different sections. Page 11 describes the liner clamp as joining the liner and bushing and provides a model-based torque guide. Page 10 discusses clamps at the crosshead extension rod, sub-rod and piston rod connections. Page 8 gives a separate table for the liner pilot bushing nuts.

The liner-clamp passage also says that its faces must not touch. This statement is not a numerical gap specification. The page does not establish a universal gap measurement or prove that any replacement clamp is compatible with the installed assembly.

A document check before a work order is released

Use the following editorial checklist to make the reference traceable. These record fields are suggestions, not additional OEM requirements.

A detached screenshot of a torque value loses the heading, units and applicability context. Retain those details together. A matching number in another table does not make that table applicable to this connection.

Keep the evidence attached to the right component

Photographs can document visible markings or the location identified by maintenance personnel, where safe and permitted. A photograph alone does not establish material, fastener grade, drawing revision or interchangeability. Do not infer those properties from appearance.

If the installed hardware differs from the drawing, or the source cannot be matched to the equipment, record the discrepancy and refer it for technical clarification before selecting a procedure. Do not fill a missing model row with data from a similar-looking pump. A completed document checklist does not certify installation quality or fitness for service.

Scope and related records

The NOV 12-P-160 and NOV 14-P-220 pages are equipment navigation links; they do not establish clamp interchangeability. For the separate bushing connection, see the 7-P-50 liner pilot bushing document check. That article is not a liner-clamp tightening reference.

Before any physical work, authorized personnel must follow the installed equipment's approved shutdown, isolation, pressure-release verification and safe-access procedure. This article does not reproduce that procedure or authorize opening a loaded connection. It makes no part-number, stock, delivery or service-life claim.

Source

NOV, How to Treat Your Type P Triplex Mud Pump, document 25-101131, pages 7–11; accessed 7 October 2026, Los Angeles time. The component distinctions and liner-clamp face condition above are paraphrased from the OEM document. Work-order fields and evidence-handling suggestions are editorial guidance. Applicability to installed hardware still needs confirmation.

FAQ

Can the rod-clamp torque table be used for a liner clamp?

Do not transfer it. The source treats those connections separately; identify the applicable component and equipment instruction.

Does “faces must not touch” specify a gap size?

No. The cited liner-clamp passage gives no numerical gap size, and this guide does not invent one.

Does the model name prove that a replacement clamp will fit?

No. Installed assembly identification and applicable component documentation are still needed.

Does completing this checklist authorize startup?

No. It records document selection only; installation verification and return-to-service authorization remain separate.
