NOV Type P Valve and Seat Pairing: Maintenance Records

A valve removed for inspection should remain traceable to its original position. Similar-looking parts on a service bench do not provide that traceability. This guide focuses on recording valve-to-seat identity during NOV Type P maintenance, rather than selecting a valve design or describing seat removal.

The original maintenance requirement

NOV booklet 25-101131, page 16, directs maintainers to return a valve to its original seat after routine inspection or disc replacement because the pair develops matching wear patterns. It also states that an old valve must not be installed in a new seat.

Confirm applicability against the installed assembly and current manual. These statements do not authorize reuse of damaged components or prove interchangeability between pump models. Work on the fluid end requires authorized personnel, shutdown, energy isolation and verified pressure release under the site's procedure. Do not open a pressurized valve chamber to establish a part's identity.

Establish position before parts become separated

A useful record connects the equipment, the valve location and the removed component. Use the site's cylinder and suction/discharge naming convention, including the viewing direction when needed. Write the location on a work sheet and on an approved external tray or container label. Do not stamp, scratch or mark sealing surfaces to create an identifier.

The suggestions below are editorial controls for record keeping, not OEM tooling or acceptance instructions. Keep the record attached to the work order as parts move between inspection and reassembly areas.

Pairing record checklist

A location label is not a condition assessment. Keep the inspection disposition alongside the identity record so that a correctly identified but rejected part cannot be mistaken for a serviceable one. If identity has been lost, record it as unresolved and refer the decision to the responsible maintenance engineer; do not assign a location based on appearance alone.

Distinguish the repair scope

Disc replacement, valve replacement and seat replacement should appear as different actions in the work order. A note saying “valve serviced” does not show which of those occurred. Record the actual action and the approved component identification without inferring that a new disc makes the whole valve new.

Use the NOV 12-P-160 and NOV 14-P-220 catalogue pages to navigate equipment families, then verify parts against the installed drawing. The catalogue links do not establish a common valve or seat. Use the mud pump daily maintenance checklist to link this record to the wider maintenance work order.

Handover and closeout

Before closing the record, reconcile the removed-part list with the authorized installed-part list. State which parts were retained, replaced or held for assessment. Preserve the original location history when a part is rejected instead of overwriting it with the replacement identity.

Record the applicable reassembly procedure and subsequent verification separately. The maintenance authority decides whether the equipment may return to service. This article supplies no installation force, torque, wear limit or remaining-life estimate.

Source and scope

Primary reference: NOV, How to Treat Your Type P Triplex Mud Pump, 25-101131, ©2025, page 16, accessed 26 September 2026. The short OEM summary concerns original-seat return and the prohibition on an old valve in a new seat. The labelling and handover checklist is original editorial guidance, not a replacement for the serial-number-specific service documentation.

FAQ

Does a new disc make a used valve a new valve?

Do not record it that way. Identify the disc replacement separately and retain the valve's actual service history.

What if parts from different locations were mixed?

Record the lost identity and obtain an authorized disposition before reassembly. Similar appearance does not recover the original pairing.

Does keeping the original pairing guarantee that the parts are usable?

No. Identification and condition assessment are separate requirements; preserve both results.

Can this checklist determine a replacement part number?

No. Confirm the installed assembly and applicable parts documentation. The record helps communicate identity and history, not establish compatibility.
