NOV Type P Suction Relief Valve: Review the Piping Evidence

A suction-line relief-valve record needs more than a valve name. The document review must connect the identified valve to the actual line, the equipment it protects and the applicable piping record. This checklist supports that review; it is not a relief-system design, adjustment or operating procedure.

The OEM warning that must remain visible

NOV document 25-101131, page 19, explains that backflow or a pressure surge from the triplex pump can damage the charging pump and suction dampener. It identifies simultaneous suction and discharge valve failure in the same module as one possible cause.

The same page expressly warns against routing the discharge-line pressure relief valve back into the suction line because that practice can introduce damaging overpressure. Do not use that routing. The source also calls for examination of custom piping arrangements that could introduce discharge pressure into a suction line through an accidentally open valve.

Build a traceable line record

The following fields are editorial recommendations for a documentation review:

Trace the evidence for each route separately. A label reading “relief” does not establish whether it refers to suction protection or discharge protection. Do not interpret an unmarked branch or an incomplete photograph as proof of its destination. An unverified destination remains an open question for the responsible technical reviewer.

Keep specified values separate from observed values

When a setting or valve specification appears in an existing record, retain its unit, document revision, equipment applicability and approval reference. Keep recorded settings, measured test results and acceptance decisions in separate fields. A copied number without its source cannot close the review.

This article deliberately provides no universal setting, capacity selection or adjustment method. A general booklet description does not establish the required configuration for every installation. Missing or conflicting information requires an OEM or authorized engineering assessment using the applicable system documentation.

Close discrepancies through the responsible authority

If records indicate the prohibited discharge-to-suction relief routing, flag that exact drawing reference and route for prompt assessment under the site's safety process. Do not treat this checklist as permission to operate, alter piping, change a setting or actuate a valve. Unknown routing or unverified protection must not be converted into a “passed” entry merely because the pump ran previously.

For a review handover, retain the discrepancy, evidence reference, responsible reviewer, requested clarification and final documented disposition. This preserves the distinction between locating a record and accepting the installed system. Physical inspection or work requires qualified personnel and the applicable isolation and pressure-release procedures.

Model context and original source

The NOV 12-P-160 model page and the NOV 14-P-220 model page provide product context, not approval of a piping arrangement or relief setting.

Source checked October 8, 2026: NOV, How to Treat Your Type P Triplex Mud Pump, document 25-101131, page 19. The record fields and handover format above are editorial guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does the source say suction relief protects?

The charging pump and suction-line dampener against damaging backflow or pressure surges described in the OEM document.

Can discharge relief be routed back into the suction line?

No. The cited NOV page expressly warns against that practice because it can cause damaging overpressure.

Does this checklist supply a relief setting?

No. Verify the applicable specification and approved system documents; this article is not a setting or adjustment instruction.

Is a photograph enough to verify an outlet destination?

An incomplete photograph is not sufficient. Reconcile the route with applicable drawings and authorized inspection evidence, leaving uncertainties unresolved.
